Chapter 21: The Right Question
Hob spread the rubbing on the kitchen table.
He weighted its corners with a rolling pin, a bread knife, a jar of salt and a Hound's bowl.
It was two long sheets of paper, rubbed with charcoal from the line at the top of the Oak.
The letters stood out white against the black, thin and sharp and strange.
Nine Hounds lay under the table in a pale heap, and the oldest bitch had her chin on my boot.
"You went up the trunk for this?" I said.
"On the Queen's own ladder, miss, at three in the morning, with a candle in my teeth."
"If the Regent asks, I was fetching apples."
"It's winter."
"I'm old," said Hob. "I get confused."
I bent over the first sheet.
The letters were older than any Welsh I had been taught.
But the bones of it were my nain's, and so was the way a sentence sat on its verb.
