Chapter 8: The Hot Spring
"The moths can't cross the hot spring," Emrys said. "The steam wets their wings."
"That's a very convenient fact."
"It's why Maeve and I came here to talk."
He led me down a stair cut into raw rock, out of the roots and into a cavern the size of a chapel.
A pool lay in it, round and black, with steam rolling off its face in slow white curls.
Lanterns of green glass hung over the water on chains, and the walls ran with warm wet light.
I stood at the edge with my coat over my arm and my mouth open.
"You brought me to a hot spring."
"I brought you somewhere nobody listens."
I took off my boots and my socks and put my feet in, and the heat went up my shins.
He sat beside me on the stone, in his shirtsleeves, and rolled up his trousers.
For a while neither of us said anything.
"Who's Maeve?" I said, at last. "You've said the name twice."
His face softened in a way I hadn't seen.
"The old Queen. She had the Hills before me. She's dead seven years."
