The winter orchard is the coldest place in the Hills, and the only one where the Regent's moths don't fly.
Glass roofs arch over rows of bare apple trees, with frost on the panes and a bench under the oldest bough.
Emrys sat on it with his elbows on his knees.
He had been quiet all afternoon, and I had let him be.
"Four days," he said, to the frozen grass. "She's never called a Question. She wants me to say something."
"Then don't say anything she can use."
"I won't say anything but what's so."
"That's the problem, isn't it?"
He looked up, and the lantern caught his eyes.
I crossed the grass and stood in front of him, with my breath smoking.
"Emrys. Has anyone ever told you that you're good?"
"I'm the King."
"That's not what I asked."
He thought about it with that terrible honesty.
"Maeve told me I was careful," he said.
"Careful isn't good."
