Chapter 13: Twelfth Night
The Sight-mage crossed the black and white floor without hurry.
She stopped in front of Wynne and held out one grey hand.
"Your wrist," she said.
Wynne lifted it.
The thread ran gold from her skin to Tavish's, and his fingers were still locked around hers.
"Warden, you will not let go," the Sight-mage said. "I want it whole."
"I wasn't planning to."
She laid two fingers on the thread and closed her pale eyes.
The Council did not breathe.
Lorcan stood at the Chancellor's shoulder, smiling at the floor.
"A binding makes a thing happen," the Sight-mage said at last. "It bends a will, or it holds one."
She opened her eyes.
"This holds nothing. Every inch of it is a thing that was already there."
"Then you clear her," said the councilor with the grey beard.
"I cannot clear her. I have read two people."
The Sight-mage turned to the Chancellor.
"Lord Chancellor, I will have your oath that the recall was genuine."
"I swear it," the Chancellor said, "before this Court and before you."
"The Court Mage says it forces want. I can only say it did not force it here. The proof is a third and fourth person."
