Chapter 18: The Queen's Writ
The Queen did not shout.
She put both hands on the head of her stick and looked down the table at the Chancellor.
It went on for a very long time.
"Your cousin holds a gate of mine against a Warden of mine," she said. "On a day I married him."
"My cousin holds it in trust, Majesty, under a Council order."
"A void order."
"The Council has not yet..."
"I am the Council on Twelfth Night," said the Queen. "Pen."
A page ran to her with a quill and a sheet of cream paper.
She wrote four lines in a spidery hand and pressed her signet into the wax with her thumb.
"My writ," she said. "The Keep is the Warden's. Any man who bars its gate answers to the Crown."
She held it out.
Tavish took it.
"I would send the palace guard with you," the Queen said. "Half of them are the Chancellor's, and I do not know which half."
"We have twelve," Tavish said.
