Chapter 13: Not the Seat

Rhys's POV

I stood at the study window until the rain stopped.

Lorna had gone down in the elevator an hour ago, and Willa had gone to the guest room without a word.

Saturday was two days off, and I had one move that Conrad would not see coming.

It would cost me the Hargrove seat.

I picked up the phone and called the oldest elder on my pack's council, a man who had hated me since I took the seat at twenty-six.

"It's one in the morning," he said.

"I'm offering you a trade."

"Go on."

"I step down as Alpha on Sunday. The council hears Willa Ransome's case in full, with the technician and the lab report. You get your pick of my successor."

He was quiet for a long time.

"You'd give up the pack for a girl who sells blood."

"She's the Black Pine heir. And she's mine."

"You're engaged to the other one."

"Not after Saturday."

He hung up without answering, which from him meant yes.

I put the phone face down on the desk.

"You were going to do that without telling me."

Willa stood in the doorway in my shirt, with her arms folded and her feet bare.

I had not heard the door.

I had not heard her at all, and I was an Alpha with a wolf's ears.

"I was going to tell you in the morning."

"After it was done."

"After it was done," I said. "Yes."

She crossed the room and stopped an arm's length from me.

"I thought you'd say sorry for Sabrina," she said. "For the ring, for Conrad's alliance. I've been waiting a week for it."

"I am sorry."

"I thought I'd never forgive a man who was going to marry her."
