Chapter 14: Conrad's Offer

Willa's POV

Conrad asked for us at the Black Pine hall on Friday noon, and I went because I wanted to see his face.

Rhys walked beside me up the steps with his cane in his left hand and his right hand against the small of my back.

The hall was a long room of dark timber, with a fire pit at one end and eleven elders in a half circle.

I had stood in that room at nineteen, in a white dress, and heard a doctor say I was nothing.

Conrad sat in the high chair at the head of the circle with his signet ring on his finger.

Sabrina stood behind him in a camel coat with her phone in her hand.

Lorna sat at the far end of the row, and she did not look at me.

"Willa," Conrad said, warmly. "Thank you for coming. You look well."

"I look like I haven't had a pill in a week."

"Which is why I asked you here." He opened a leather folder on his knee. "My family has been unfair to you, and I mean to put it right."

I stayed standing.

"Two million dollars," he said. "A house in Bellingham, in your name, free and clear. A seat at the elders' table as an honored guest of the pack."

A murmur went through the half circle.

"What do I sign?"

"A short statement. That you have no claim on this family or on the Black Pine seat, and that you'll live outside the county."
