Chapter 15: The Fitting

Rhys insisted I have a dress for Saturday, so on Friday afternoon we went to the one boutique in Cascade Falls that stays open for private fittings.

Sabrina was already there.

She stood on the fitting platform in ivory silk, with two friends on the couch and a girl in a headset holding a ring light.

She saw me in the mirror and lit up.

"Oh, good," she said. "I was hoping to see the girl who thinks she's my sister."

The saleswoman went pale and found something to do in the back.

Rhys stayed by the door with his cane, and I gave him a look that said I had this.

"You're live," I said to Sabrina.

"Twenty thousand people," she said sweetly. "Say hi."

I walked up to the platform.

"Hi, everyone. I'm Willa. I'm the one in the clinic video. The one she posted."

Sabrina's smile stiffened.

"Careful," she whispered.

"I want to ask her something while you're all here."

I looked up at her.

"Sabrina, when you were brought into the Dunleavy house, what did you smell on Lorna?"

"What?"

"Lorna. Your mother. When she hugged you. What did she smell like to you?"

Her friends stopped scrolling.

"Perfume," she said. "Obviously."

"Underneath. We're wolves. Every child smells their mother's skin, and you know her scent better than anything."

Sabrina's eyes flicked toward the door and back.

"I smell Conrad on you," I said. "Every inch. The same oil, the same salt. I've smelled it on you since I walked in. Not one note of Lorna anywhere."

The girl in the headset lowered the ring light a few inches.

"That's crazy," Sabrina said. "That's, that's a hospital mix-up, everyone knows it."
