Chapter 16: The Hollow

I got to him before he hit the floor all the way.

Glass cut my palm, and I didn't feel it.

"Rhys. Look at me."

His eyes were open and grey, with no gold left in them.

His skin was cold and wet, and a black vein stood out at his temple that I had never seen before.

"It's the Hollow," he said. His teeth chattered. "I thought I had until Sunday."

"You have until I say."

I dragged him up onto the bed, and his body was heavy and loose.

I pushed my wrist against his mouth.

"Drink."

He turned his face away.

"Rhys, drink it."

"No."

"You've done it four months. Do it."

"It's too far gone." He breathed in hard. "A draw won't reach it now. It's in the bone. The only thing that could is a bite that binds, and I won't do that to you."

"Do what?"

"Tie you to a man who is about to die."

I stared at him.

His hand found mine on the sheet, and he squeezed it, weak.

"Take the car," he said. "Take Lorna and the technician and go to the elders in Bellingham. Tell them everything. Don't be in this room when it stops."

"Stop talking."

"Willa."

"I said stop."

He closed his mouth.

The room was silent except for his heartbeat, which was too slow and too light, with a stumble in it.
