Chapter 4: The Fiancee

Sabrina stopped in the doorway with the paper bag hanging from her fingers.

She looked at me in Rhys's bed, and at his hand still near my arm.

Her phone came up.

"Oh my God," she said, and she was smiling. "Oh my God, Mom, you have to come see this."

Lorna came in behind her, still in the cream coat.

Two of Rhys's staff stood in the hall behind them, a doorman and a woman in a black blazer, and neither of them looked at anyone.

"Sabrina, put the phone down," Rhys said.

"Why? She's in your bed."

"She collapsed in an alley. She is my guest."

"Your guest." Sabrina pointed the phone at me. "Yesterday she was on the floor of a clinic, begging. Now she's wearing your shirt."

I looked down.

I was wearing one of his white shirts, buttoned wrong, and I hadn't noticed.

"The nurse put it on me," I said. "My jacket was soaked."

"Sure."

"Ask the nurse."

"She'll say whatever he pays her to say." Sabrina turned to her mother. "This is exactly what I told you. She's after his money. She was always after somebody's money."

Lorna's eyes were wet, and she wasn't looking at me.

"Willa," she said. "Sweetheart, please. You'll only get hurt."

"Is that what the pills are for?"

Her face changed.

It was small, only a flinch around the mouth, but I heard her heart miss a beat.

"What pills?" she said.

I did not answer, because I did not want her to know yet how much I knew.

Sabrina laughed.

"Look at her. She wants everyone to feel sorry for her. Rhys, tell her to leave. Tell her you're not paying for her."

"I am paying for her," Rhys said.
