Chapter 5: The Brunch

"Understood," I said to her back, and I got up and went to take a shower.

I stood under the hot water for ten minutes and told myself I was fine.

I was a professional, I had signed a paper, and the paper had a page of rules.

Last night had not been in the rules, so it had not happened.

That was the plan, and I almost believed it until I saw my own face in the steamed mirror.

I looked like a woman who had been kissed for hours.

By eight we were in the black car again, saying nothing at all.

Joanna read her phone and I watched Knoxville go by.

Once I caught her looking at my hands, and she went back to her phone so fast it was almost funny.

Boyd Breckinridge waited for us at a long table in the hotel's brunch room.

He had a plate of biscuits and gravy the size of a hubcap, and he did not get up.

"Sit," he said. "Eat. And let's find out whether you two know one another."

"Uncle Boyd," Joanna said.

"I'm not asking you, Joanna. I'm asking the singer."

He pointed a biscuit at me.

"What does my niece take in her coffee?"

I looked at her cup, which sat untouched by her elbow.

"Black," I said. "And she opens a sugar packet every morning, and she never uses it. She turns the packet in her fingers and puts it back."

Joanna's head came around slowly.

"I do not," she said.

"You did it on Tuesday, Wednesday, and today."

Boyd made a sound in his mustache that might have been a laugh.

"What's she afraid of?"

"Silence," I said, and then I felt my face heat. "Not silence exactly. She's afraid of a room where nobody's talking and she's the one who has to start."
