"I'll carry it myself," Ye Ming had told the lawyer through the door.
By evening he stood under the studio lights with the lamp in both hands.
The wall behind him was a black screen four meters high.
Two hundred people sat in tiered seats facing him.
The widow was in the third row with her daughter, holding a tin of cliff tea in her lap.
Master Lu sat in the front row in cream silk, smiling at the camera.
The lawyer stood at the foot of the stage steps with a folder under his arm.
The producer, in the control booth above the audience, gave Ye Ming a thumbs-up through the glass.
"We are live in five," said the floor manager.
Inside the cracked brass, the candle burned small and steady.
"Are you there?" Ye Ming asked without moving his lips.
"Thin," said Gu Chen. "But here. Two hundred people are looking at you. It helps."
"Stay in the light. Tell me if it fades."
"I'm not going to fade," said Gu Chen. "Not tonight."
"Whatever happens in the next hour," said Ye Ming, barely moving his lips, "I'm taking you home after."
"Say the rest."
"I'm not putting you down until it's light."
The candle leaned toward his chest and stayed there, warm against the brass.
