Chapter 21: Sound
The hearing aid was the size of a grain of rice, and it cost more than my car.
The clinic on Monroe Avenue had fitted it the week before, on the one real appointment the order had bought.
Teo had worn it for four hours and then taken it out and put it in his shirt pocket without a word.
On the night of April eighth he took it out of the pocket again.
We were in a hotel room on the ninth floor across the street from the courthouse.
The prosecutor's office had booked it under a name that was not either of ours.
Two of the old men from the club sat in the corridor on folding chairs, with their coats on and a thermos between them.
The county had released him to the custody of his own counsel for the night.
His counsel was a young woman from the prosecutor's office who had shaken my hand at the door.
She looked at the monitor on his ankle and the look on my face, and said she would be in the next room with the television on loud.
Then she had gone.
The door had closed, and there was a lamp, a bed, and a window onto the lit face of the courthouse.
A man stood in the middle of the carpet with a small beige thing in his palm.
He looked at it.
He looked at me.
I did not tell him to put it in.
I sat on the edge of the bed with my hands in my lap and waited.
He lifted his hands.
I AM AFRAID, he signed.
I thought of the first day, and the first sign he had ever made to me.
GOOD, I signed.
THAT MEANS YOU ARE NOT STUPID.
He laughed.
It was a real laugh, and I heard it, and so did he.
