Chapter 21: Kestner's Last Move
Coach Kestner's office at five fifty-five smelled of stale coffee and floor polish.
A woman in a gray coat sat in the visitor's chair with a leather folder on her lap.
She was the university's lawyer, and she did not look comfortable.
Elliot and Tanner stood in front of the desk.
Coach sat behind it with his hands folded over his stomach.
"Read it," Coach told her.
The lawyer cleared her throat and took a page from the folder.
"Effective immediately," she read, "Mr. Elliot Erickson's clinical standing is withdrawn, pending a conduct hearing."
"Any medical document signed by Mr. Erickson after this notice has no force."
"The athletic department will not recognize a clearance he signs."
Tanner took half a step forward.
"That's every clearance," he said. "He's the only one who's treated me."
