Chapter 24: The Finall Play
Two hours before kickoff, Elliot's mother stood in the tunnel under the stadium with a small blue envelope in both hands.
She had grown thinner in two years, and she held the envelope as if it might break.
"I should have given it to you at the hospital," she said. "I thought I was protecting you."
"Mom."
"I was wrong. Read it."
Elliot slid his thumb under the flap.
The card inside had a cartoon football on the front, the kind sold at drugstore counters.
The handwriting was a boy's, rushed and slanted, in blue ballpoint.
Elliot, I'm sorry I couldn't make them stop. I tried.
I'm not supposed to be here, but I wanted you to know somebody on that sideline was on your side.
If you ever want to throw again, call me. T. Thurmond, number 12.
Elliot read it twice.
He felt his mother's hand settle on his arm.
"He was nineteen," she said.
"I know," Elliot said, and laughed, and wiped his face with the back of his wrist.
