Chapter 13: Coward

"Where was he?" I said.

Mirabel only smiled.

Then she turned on her heel and walked out through the lobby doors, and nobody stopped her.

Stellan started after her.

I caught his sleeve.

"Don't," I said. "Not you. Not tonight."

"She just told us my nephew..."

"She told us to ask him. So I'll ask him."

His eyes were still gold.

The gold went out of them slowly.

"Where?"

"Somewhere he thinks I'm saying yes."

I took out my phone and texted Jarrett.

Hospital chapel. My answer.

He answered in under a minute.

Ten minutes. Don't change your mind.

"Take her to the ER," I told Stellan. "Get her wrists looked at. Get her a cup of tea."

"I don't need tea," Lucille said.

"Then get him a cup of tea."

"If he raises his voice, I'll hear it through two floors," he said.

"I know."

The chapel was at the end of the first floor, past radiology.

Six short pews, a box of tissues and a window of colored glass with a pine tree in it.

I sat in the second pew and folded my hands so they wouldn't shake.

Jarrett came in at twenty past midnight.

He smelled of the good wine and a lot of cologne.

"You scared me," he said, sliding into the pew beside me. "I heard there was some business with Lucille."

"There was."

"Mirabel gets carried away."

"Mirabel's login pulled the bag that went into your uncle's arm."

His smile stayed exactly where it was.

A vein jumped in his throat.

"That's crazy," he said.

"She said to ask you where you were when the shot went off."

He laughed.

"I was with you. I was in your basement."

"No. You came down at one. Stellan was shot before midnight."

He didn't say anything.

"So where were you, Jarrett?"

He looked at the pine tree in the glass.

"At Boyd's," he said finally. "With the two board men. Boyd said to have them over for a drink and keep them there."

"Keep them there?"

"Till the phones went off."

I sat very still.

"Then he said to bring them to the basement," Jarrett went on, faster now, like he'd been dying to say it to somebody. "To do it that night. In front of people."
