Chapter 16: The Den

Yanzhi did not decide to change.

His body decided, the way it does when the rest of him has gone out of the room.

The orange silk tore off his shoulders, and the world dropped.

Then he was on four paws in the roots with his fur on end and his mouth full of teeth.

The old hunter stooped to the doorway and flung the net.

Yanzhi went under it, through the gap between the hunter's boots, and hit the first hound in the chest.

They rolled in the snow.

It was a spirit hound, grey, as big as a calf, with no eyes in its head and a bell hung from its collar.

Every time the bell rang, Yanzhi's skull rang with it.

He got his jaws around its foreleg and heard the bone go.

The second hound hit him from the side.

He felt its teeth meet in his shoulder, deep, and the heat of his own blood running down his ribs.

He screamed, a high thin fox scream.

The third hound was over his head with its mouth open when something struck it out of the air with a crack.

It was a staff.

It broke in two across the hound's skull, and the beast went down and burst into grey ash.

Jingmo stood over Yanzhi with half a staff in each fist.

He had run the whole slope.

He had no coat, only his grey robes soaked to the knee, and he was breathing.

The second hound let go of Yanzhi's shoulder.

It looked at Jingmo.
