Chapter 14: The File
By seven on Tuesday night, a hundred and forty people had crowded into the great hall.
News had gone round the county.
Eero stood beside me in a clean flannel shirt, and under it, I knew, he was marked with my teeth.
The Registrar stood at the front with a manila folder in both hands.
He looked grim and completely unyielding.
"Before the elders decide anything," Gunnar Torvik said, "this pack is owed the truth about the wolf."
"It's owed a hearing," Ingrid said.
"It is owed this."
He opened the folder and read in his flat voice.
"Saari, E. Assessed at nineteen. Unsafe. Violent at the moon. Not to be released to any mate or any member."
The hall stirred.
"Last night you saw what he is," he said, and turned to me. "Ms. Aune, you were fortunate."
"Can I see that?" I said.
"It is a confidential record."
"Then read the bottom of the page."
He did not move.
"Gunnar," Ingrid said. "The bottom."
His thumb slid over the lowest line of the page and stayed there.
