Chapter 20: The Pup
The east nest room was hot as a bakery.
The woman on the round bed was swearing steadily at the ceiling.
She was twenty-six, a human, a hairdresser from Grand Marais.
She had walked into the club in August with a plastic tote of snacks and a list of questions.
She had picked a wolf at the September moon, and he had picked her back.
He now stood in the corner, white as paper, with his back against the wall.
Pregnancy in the pack ran about two months, whichever way it went, and nobody knew why.
A retired nurse from the pack knelt at the foot of the bed with her sleeves rolled.
Ingrid stood at the head with a damp cloth.
"There she is," Ingrid said, when she saw me. "Come, dear. She won't take the cloth from me."
The woman's eyes found mine.
They were wild and wet.
"You're the voice," she gasped. "The one from the scanner. They say you talk people through."
"I'm Anja."
"Say it. Say it so I can stop being scared."
I took her hand.
It was slick and clutching, and she nearly broke my fingers.
