The woman from the governor's office wore a grey coat and carried a leather folder.
She looked at Ingrid's kitchen.
It was Monday morning, a week into December, with snow on the lodge roof and soup on the stove.
Ingrid set a bowl in front of her without asking.
Jo sat at the end of the table in her hockey jersey with her chin on her fists.
Eero stood behind my chair, as he always did now.
His hand lay on my shoulder, warm, and the aide kept looking at it.
"The state has had four packs ask for guidance since August," she said.
"A dozen human women in a dozen counties have signed up for lists like yours, and no two lists work the same way."
"They don't have Gunnar Torvik," Ingrid said. "Thank God."
