Chapter 23: The Third Moon

The cellar was not the same room.

Jo's bear had carried a small iron stove down the stairs in three pieces and bolted it together in the corner.

Ingrid had hung white lights across the vaulted ceiling, hundreds of them, and laid thick wool rugs over the stone.

Where the iron cot had been, there was a bed made of two quilts, six pillows.

A mattress from the lodge attic.

On the wall above it, where the chain had hung, there was a row of bolt holes, filled with plaster and painted white.

Someone had written across them in blue paint, in a round, bossy hand, Nobody locks this door.

I stood at the bottom of the steps in my long wool coat.

The trapdoor was open above me, and the third moon was climbing the lake.

Eero stood in front of me, a man, barefoot, in jeans.

His eyes were gold.

"Take the coat off," he said.

I took it off.

"Dress too."

I looked at him.

It was not the voice he used in bed.

It was lower, and flatter, and it had no please in it.

My knees turned to water.

"Say it again," I said.

"Take your dress off, Anja."

I took it off over my head, and stood in the string-light in my underwear and my boots.

He walked around me once, slowly.

"Tonight you let me say it," he said. "All of it. And you do as I say."

"Do I?"

"You said everything. Out loud."

"I did."

"Then on your knees."

I went down on the rug.
