Chapter 8: The Chain
The Thursday meeting started at seven, and by seven-ten I wanted to throw a chair.
Every seat in the great hall was taken.
Humans on the folding chairs, wolves along the walls, the hearth roaring.
Jo sat beside me with her arms folded and a hockey scarf round her neck.
Ingrid stood at the head of the room with her hands on her hips.
The Registrar stood beside her with his clipboard and his cold glasses, and a heavy iron ring of keys on his belt.
"The Chain," he said, "is the oldest custom of this pack."
He did not look at any paper.
He knew it by heart.
"An unmatched male wolf, at the full moon, is attended in the lower room."
A murmur ran through the hall.
Some of the old wolves along the wall had gone stiff.
I put my hand up.
"Attended by what?"
"By the iron, Ms. Aune."
I looked at him.
"What iron?"
"The chain in the cellar. It has been in use for ninety years."
His voice never changed.
"A wolf without a mate cannot be trusted with the moon."
"It protects him, and it protects the others."
"And you wrote this?"
"My father kept it. I keep it."
"How many wolves are chained right now?"
