Chapter 12: What White Means

"Say it," I said.

I sat up in the dark and pulled the sheet over my chest.

Alaric did not sit up.

"The first kings of this land were white wolves," he said to the ceiling. "Every one of them. It was in their blood, and it came down through the daughters as often as the sons."

"By the oldest law we have, the throne belongs to whoever carries it."

"There hasn't been a white wolf in sixty years."

"There hasn't been one that anyone was allowed to see."

I felt the cold start in my hands.

"My grandfather took the crown when the last white king died without a son," he said. "The daughters were married off to pack Alphas and told to keep quiet. My father finished the job."

"One by one, they died. A fever, a fall, a bad winter."

"My mother," I said slowly.

"I think so."

"She was Edmund Molyneux's wife. She died when I was seven. Everyone said it was her lungs."

"Astrid, I don't know that."

"You know enough."

"I know your mother had a white line behind her, and I know my father paid for a child to vanish a few months before her wolf would have come in."

"And you know it was white."

"I knew it last week, on the bank," he said. "I only guessed before."

"You guessed at the ford."

He turned his head.

"The first time you saw the crown on my wrist, you were lying in a field with an arrow in your shoulder," I said. "You looked at my arm, and you went pale, and you didn't say a word."
