Chapter 20: The Table
The detective took Pierce's phone and bagged it in clear plastic.
He handed it to the board chair without a word.
The chair read the first message aloud, in a flat voice.
"From Rowan, the day of the reading: She won't sign. Fix it. Nothing with my name on it."
He scrolled.
"The next morning: Deposit it before the trustee calls. Whatever it takes."
He scrolled once more.
"A week later: If she's smart she'll hold out for sixty days. Make sure she fails."
He set the phone down on the table.
"I'd like to hear from you, Mr. Rowan Brannigan, how that is a family misunderstanding."
Rowan sat very straight.
He looked at the phone, and then he looked up and found the room staring at him.
"A text can be read many ways," he said.
"Show me the way."
"I was frustrated. I said things to my brother. We all do."
"Did you tell him to put your sister's name on a bank account?"
"I told him to make it go away."
"The money, the check and the proxy," the chair said. "On company paper. Using the company's letterhead to evict her mother."
Rowan opened his mouth.
"May I?" a thin voice said from the back.
The old woman with the bumblebee pin was on her feet, leaning on her cane.
"I sat on this board thirty years," she said. "I watched your father put his daughter's school picture on this table every April. You rolled your eyes at it. I saw you.
"I'd like to know what kind of man hides a mother's letters from her daughter for eleven years."
The room moved. Someone said, "What letters?"
Tobias stepped away from the wall.
"Two hundred and eleven postcards," he said. "I took them out of Rowan's safe. The detective has the box."
Rowan didn't answer him.
His eyes were on me.
