Footsteps came down the hall, a lot of them at once.

Gordon got there first, napkin still tucked into his collar.

Behind him came half the rehearsal dinner, drinks in hand, craning to see.

Then Lucian.

He stopped in the doorway.

He looked at me in my bow tie.

At Jake holding the envelope over my head.

At the open piano bench.

At the painting of Harold on the wall.

"She broke in," Bianca said. "She was going through Grandpa's things."

"I'm calling the police," Gordon said, reaching into his jacket.

Then he saw the envelope.

His hand stopped.

I watched his big red face go gray, all at once.

"What is that?" he said.

"Nothing," Jake said quickly. "Some old paper she was trying to plant."

"It's a letter," I said. "From Harold. To Lucian. It was in the piano bench."

The guests murmured.
