Chapter 15: The Group Chat

The file was twelve pages long.

Scans, the physical therapist's notes, the strain grade, the date of injury.

Somebody had photographed it page by page and posted all twelve.

Forty-one messages in the chat and it was still going.

I read the first three and stopped.

Logan sat on the edge of the table with his phone in both hands.

"Who's in this chat," I said.

"Everybody."

"Coaches?"

"Players. It's the player chat."

"Who put it in."

"It came from her number."

I pulled my shirt straight and picked up my bag.

"Get dressed."

"I'm dressed."

"Then get in the car."

We drove to his apartment because it was closer.

He had a two-bedroom in a building near the river with a leather couch and a TV that was too big.

I sat on the couch and he stood by the window.

His phone kept going off.

"Turn it off," I said.

"I want to see it."

"You don't want to see it."

"I want to know who says what."

I took the phone out of his hand and turned it off and put it on the coffee table.

"Okay," I said.

"Okay."

"Who's seen this."

"Forty guys, two coaches, the equipment manager. Everybody."

"Has the coach seen it."

"He's in the chat."

"Then he's seen it."

He sat down on the couch next to me.

"That's my medical file," he said.

"I know."

"That's the scan where they found the tear."

"I know."

"Everybody on the team has looked at my groin on a twelve-page PDF."

"Logan."

"I'm fine."

"You're not fine."

"I'm fine."

He put his elbows on his knees and looked at the floor.

The apartment was quiet. Somebody downstairs was watching TV.
