Chapter 24: The Statement
The department hearing was Monday at 10:00 in a room with a long table and no windows.
Six people on one side. The athletic director, the compliance officer, the coordinator, the team doctor, a faculty rep, and a lawyer.
I sat alone on the other side with a folder.
Logan wanted to come. I told him no.
The athletic director opened it.
"Ms. Kline, this is a review of an allegation. It's not a hearing and there's no counsel present."
"Okay."
"You may have your supervisor with you if you'd like."
"I don't."
"Then let's begin."
The compliance officer read the complaint out loud.
It was two paragraphs. Ms. Mercer alleges that the student trainer cleared the player for game load against her own medical recommendation, resulting in re-injury.
"That's the allegation," the director said. "Ms. Kline?"
I opened the folder.
"April 27," I said. "I signed a clearance form. It's in the file and it's stamped."
"Read the operative line."
"'Cleared for practice. Not cleared for game load. Re-evaluate 4/27.'"
"And you delivered that to this office."
"I walked it down myself. It's date-stamped."
The compliance officer found the copy in his stack and held it up.
"It's here," he said.
The director nodded.
"So you didn't clear him."
"No."
"Then who put him in the game."
"The head coach."
"He's not here."
"I know."
The lawyer leaned forward.
"Ms. Kline, the coach has submitted a statement. He says you told him the player was ready."
"That's not true."
"He says you said it in the hallway outside the training room."
