Chapter 16: The Throne Hall
The Marshal had thrown the maids' petition into a brazier unread, and Luan had not slept since.
At dawn she took Cangjue's hand and led him down to the Hall of Black Lanterns.
It stood empty, with a hundred black lamps burning low and red.
Nobody had come to open the shutters yet.
She walked him up the nine obsidian steps, past the spot where he had knelt for her, to the throne.
It was a great black chair, wider than a bed, with a back carved like a rising wave.
Nine hundred years of Sovereigns had sat in it.
He had sat in it for every one of those years, alone.
"Sit," she said.
He lowered himself into the throne with his black robe falling open across his thighs, and he looked up at her with his crimson eyes.
"Hands on the arms. Keep them there."
"Yes, Luan."
She untied her sash.
She let her robe slide to the floor and stood naked above him on the top step with the lamps shining on her skin.
"Watch me."
He watched.
She ran her hands up her own ribs and cupped her breasts and rolled her nipples between her fingers until they were hard.
His grip on the arms of the throne creaked.
"Tell me what you see."
"A woman standing on my steps with nothing on," he said hoarsely. "Soft everywhere. Wet already. Looking at me like she owns this hall."
"I do."
"You do."
"Now take your cock out," she said. "Show me."
He opened his trousers with one hand, and it sprang free, heavy and dark, curving up against his stomach.
She stepped between his knees.
She turned her back to him.
"What are you doing?"
"Facing the hall," she said over her shoulder. "I want to see the room where they all knelt to you, while I sit on you."
