Chapter 12: Front Row

I didn't sell her the rolls.

I didn't say a word to her.

I served the line behind her one by one while she stood at the end of the counter in her camel coat with her five euros, and she let me.

At seven she was still there.

At eight she bought a coffee from my boss and sat at the little table by the window where Luca had sat.

At noon my boss said, "Who is the woman in the expensive coat who won't leave?"

"His fiancée."

My boss looked at Elettra for a long moment.

"Huh," she said. "She's prettier than him."

At six I turned the sign myself.

Elettra was still at the table.

She had read two newspapers in German and done the crossword in one.

"You can come out of the back," she called to my boss. "I'm not going to stab her. I didn't bring a knife through airport security."

My boss came out of the back with the rolling pin anyway and leaned on the doorframe.

I stood behind the counter with my arms folded.

"What do you want?"

"I want you at my wedding," Elettra said.

I laughed.

I couldn't help it.

"Your wedding to the man you took from me in front of eighty people."

"Yes."

"Go back to Brooklyn."

"I'm not marrying him, Klara."

The bakery was very quiet.

Out on Kastanienallee a tram went by and rattled the glass.

Elettra turned the ruby around on her finger, slowly.

"His mother paid my debts in January," she said. "You know that now. Dora's a big mouth, God bless her. What Dora doesn't know is why I said yes."

"Money."

"Money was why I got on the plane to New York. It's not why I'm staying." She looked up at me. "I came back to make Luca Corvino choose me in front of everyone. And then I'm going to leave him at the altar in front of the same people."
