Chapter 19: Nobody's Godfather

"Sit in it," I told her. "Stay sitting. Then change whatever you want, one thing at a time."

"I want to change everything."

"Then start with your mother's parking space."

She laughed so hard she dropped the phone.

When she picked it up again, her voice had gone small.

"He gave Ma's Shore Road keys to me, too. And the Brooklyn Heights apartment. He signed it over to me tonight with all your things still in it." She sniffed. "He kept one suitcase. He said he doesn't need anything else."

"Where is he going?"

Dora was quiet for a second.

"Where do you think?"

He came on the next Tuesday.

Not at six in the morning.

Not with a driver, or a hotel on Unter den Linden, or a black overcoat.

I was hosing down the sidewalk in front of the bakery at two in the afternoon when a man came up Kastanienallee from the tram stop pulling one battered suitcase with a squeaky wheel.

He wore jeans and a grey sweater.

I had never in five years seen Luca Corvino in jeans.

He stopped three meters away, out of range of the hose.

"Hi," he said.

I turned off the water.

My boss came out and stood in the doorway with her arms folded.

Two of the regulars at the window table stopped talking.

A student on a bicycle slowed down to look, because Berliners don't pretend not to stare.

"Where are you staying?" I asked.

"A room in Wedding. Over a laundromat. The landlady made me pay three months up front, in cash, because she didn't like my face."

"Smart woman."

"She's already raised the rent once."

"Where did the cash come from?"

"My own account. The one my grandfather opened when I was born, before any of it." He put his hands in his pockets, then took them out again. "It isn't much. It's mine. Nothing from the family. Not a dollar."
