Chapter 15: Noon on Alder Street
At a quarter to noon I was standing in my mother's doorway with my hand on the frame.
The yellow house looked smaller than it had in the morning.
The porch rail was crooked, the lemon curtains were drawn back, and I had packed nothing.
Sullivan stood on the step below me with his arms folded.
He had not left my side since six.
"You don't have to stay," I said.
"I know."
"It will be ugly."
"It's Alder Street," he said. "I'll try to wear a clean shirt next time."
Up and down the block, doors had opened.
A man in a bathrobe watched from the house across the road, and two women I had known since I was nine stood at the end of the walk with their arms crossed.
One of them had brought a lawn chair.
At noon exactly, a sheriff's deputy came up the walk, followed by a small man in a gray suit carrying a leather folder.
"Ms. Gidley?" the deputy said.
"Yes."
"I have an order to take possession of this property on behalf of the lender. I need you to step out of the house with your belongings."
"I'm not going to resist you," I said.
"Good."
"I'm just not going to move."
He looked at me, then at the small man, then at Sullivan.
"Ma'am, I don't want to carry anyone off a porch."
"Then don't," said the woman with the lawn chair. "It's a lovely porch."
A few people laughed.
The man in the gray suit opened his folder with a snap.
"Ms. Gidley, the note was called in default. Your delay is only costing you."
