Chapter 12: Read Me Something

On the day of the party, at four in the afternoon, I read him a love scene in his own bed.

I wasn't dressed yet.

Neither was he.

We were three hours from walking into Loretta's hall.

The green dress hung on his closet door, and the whole house smelled like frying chicken from the ground floor.

I had The Duke's Last Mistake on my tablet, propped against his knees.

"Chapter twenty-six," I said. "You asked."

"I asked."

"It's the one where she tells him she was never afraid of him."

"I know. I've heard you practice it."

"You've heard everything."

"Almost."

I looked up.

He was lying on his side with his head on his arm, watching me with an expression I couldn't read.

He'd been quiet all day.

I knew why.

I had shown him the note the night before, the one from under my door, I'LL TELL YOU WHO I AM AT THE PARTY.

He had read it for a long time.

Then he'd said, in a strange flat voice, "Let him tell you."

"Aren't you jealous anymore?"

"I'm terrified," he'd said.

I had thought it was a joke.

Now I wasn't sure.

"Read," he said.

I read.

I used the duchess voice, low and slow.

"'I was never afraid of you,' she said. 'I was afraid of what I would do if you looked at me like that again.'"

His hand slid across the sheet and found my knee.

"'He looked at her. And she did exactly what she feared.'"

His fingers moved up my thigh, very slowly.
