Chapter 17: The Real Announcement
"I'm not dying," Loretta said, before either of us could speak. "Sit down. Both of you look like you've seen a ghost."
She led us down to her kitchen in her slippers, leaning on the cane.
Her purple hat sat on the table beside a stack of papers held down by a jar of peppermints.
Costa pulled out a chair for her, and she let him, which told me how bad it was.
"I was going to say it last night," she said. "In front of everybody, with a microphone and a cake."
"Chandler ruined that," said Costa.
"Chandler ruined a lot of things."
She folded her hands.
"I'm moving to Savannah. My sister has a place near the water, and a doctor who doesn't make me climb stairs."
I stared at her.
"Miss Loretta."
"My hip is done, baby. I fell on the back steps in August and didn't tell a soul. I crawled to the door like a dog."
"Loretta," Costa said, low.
"Don't you fuss. I'm fine. I'm just not fine in this house."
