Chapter 30: The Ring in the Kitchen
Raylan Whitfield was making biscuits, and he was losing.
It was six in the morning on the first Sunday of December, and flour covered the whole kitchen counter and most of his charcoal sleeve.
"You're overworking the dough," Maybelle said.
"I'm folding it."
"You're fighting it. Don't fight it. It's a biscuit, not an audit."
I sat on the stove-side stool with a mug of coffee and my cracked watch on the table.
I did not offer to help.
He pressed the cutter into the dough.
He did it slowly, with his lip between his teeth, and eight misshapen rounds came up on the board.
"That's better," Maybelle said. "That's a biscuit that has been through something."
She wiped her hands on her apron, glanced at the clock, and picked up her purse.
"I'm going to church with your grandmother," she told him. "She is picking me up in four minutes. I'll be gone till two."
Raylan had stopped breathing.
"Yes, ma'am."
"Don't burn those."
She kissed my head at the door and murmured in my ear.
"He's been carrying that box in his pocket since Tuesday, baby. Say yes or put him out of his misery."
The screen door banged.
Outside a car horn tapped twice, and gravel crunched, and then the house was very quiet.
