Chapter 17: The Wedding
Frankie read the card over my shoulder with her coffee.
"He's blackmailing you," she said. "To come to a party."
"He's blackmailing me to watch."
"Watch what?"
"Whatever he's planning to do to Carter."
She took the invitation out of my hand and looked at the gold edges.
"And Guest," she said. "That's me."
"You don't have to."
"Theo. I've got a dress now. I'm going to get my money's worth out of it."
The Penrose estate had never looked like this.
There was a white tent on the back lawn bigger than the Hensleys' had been.
Two hundred chairs. Peonies on everything. A string orchestra, not a quartet.
Valets in white jackets took the cars at the top of the gravel drive.
I handed one of them the keys to my Ranger.
He held them.
Frankie wore a green dress with her hair down and her freckles out and her mother's pearls.
She looked like she'd been born on that lawn.
She looked like she'd fight anyone on it.
Doug found us at the edge of the tent before we'd been there a minute.
He was in a white dinner jacket, red to the hairline.
"Who invited you?"
"You did," I said, and showed him the card with his own name on it.
