Chapter 18: Royal Oak
I took Doug's hand off my lapel.
It took both of mine.
"Ask your son-in-law," I said. "He's known me since I was eight."
"I'm asking you."
"And I'm not telling you, Mr. Hensley. You spent a year deciding who I was. You can spend a little longer finding out."
Frankie stepped up beside me in her green dress.
"Also," she said, "that's a rental tux. You're wrinkling him."
The valet pulled up in my Ranger and jumped out.
Doug stood in the gravel and watched us drive away.
In the mirror, he was still standing there when we turned onto the road.
Five months later, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Eight Mile Motor Co. opened its second store.
It was on Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak.
Two blocks south of Hensley Chevrolet.
It had been a tire shop, then a vape shop, then nothing for two years.
We painted the cinder block white and put up string lights, and Frankie painted the sign herself again.
EIGHT MILE MOTOR CO. EVERY FLAW TOLD.
