Chapter 21: The Funeral
The line behind us stopped.
Men in black coats. Women in furs. The whole board of Penrose Holdings.
Every one of them heard it.
"He asked for me," I said. "Twice. He died with me in his house."
"He died confused." Carter didn't lower his voice. "Grandfather wasn't himself at the end. Anybody who visited could tell you that."
He tipped his head at my mother and me.
"These two have been circling his money for years."
My mother didn't move.
Snow was landing on her black coat.
"Carter," she said. "I changed your diapers in this town."
"And then you ran off with a tow-truck driver." He smiled at the people behind us. "My aunt. She left the family in 1998. She doesn't get to come back for the reading."
A woman in a fur hat whispered something to the man beside her.
One of the reporters across the street lifted a camera.
The two men in dark suits stepped up on either side of Carter.
"Private security," Carter said. "This is a private service. Please don't make them walk you down the steps."
Frankie took one step forward.
