Chapter 23: Daddy's Girl

Doug looked down at his daughter.

The cameras looked with him.

"Blair," he said. "What's he talking about?"

Blair folded her hands on the table.

Her nails were black for the funeral, perfect half-moons.

She didn't look at her father.

She looked at Carter, and if a look could have cut a man in half, he'd have been on two chairs.

"Not here, Daddy."

"Here," Doug said. "Right here. What is he talking about?"

The photographer from the Free Press lifted his camera.

Blair heard the click.

I watched her hear it.

I watched her decide, the way she'd decided in the hospital hallway, that being caught was worse than anything she could say.

"Freshman year," she said. "I looked up the name."

Doug's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

"I knew who he was before our first date," Blair said. "I knew the whole time."

"The whole time." Doug's voice cracked on it. "I called him the scholarship kid. For four years. At my own table."

"You liked calling him that."

Mrs. Hensley made a small sound.

"The porter job," Doug said. "At the tent. You told me to offer it. You said, 'Make it fourteen, Daddy, in front of everybody, it'll be funny.'"
