Chapter 25: The Ribbon
Frankie and I stood at our fence and watched the last floodlight go out.
Pop rolled his chair up between us.
"Well," he said. "That's quieter."
"Five hundred spaces," Frankie said. "Glass walls. Twelve service bays. I counted them from the roof once."
"Twelve," I said.
"I could fit Pop's whole life in one of those bays."
She was trying to sound like she was joking.
She wasn't.
I looked at her.
She looked at me.
"No," she said.
"I didn't say anything."
"Your face said something."
"My face said twelve bays."
Pop banged his cane on the fence post.
"Buy it," he said. "Before somebody worse does."
The bank's man met us there on a cold Thursday in April.
He had a clipboard and a ring of keys the size of a dinner plate, and he looked like he hadn't slept since Christmas.
"It's been on the market six weeks," he said, unlocking the glass doors. "Every big dealer in Michigan has walked it. Nobody wants to touch a Penrose building."
"It's not a Penrose building anymore," Frankie said.
"Try telling the newspapers that."
