Chapter 30: The Gala
The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club still looked like a wedding cake parked on the lake.
Three years to the day.
I had my father's tow-truck keys in my pocket.
Frankie got out of the truck beside me in a dark green gown she'd bought for the occasion and her mother's pearls.
She had her hair up.
She had no grease on her anywhere, which she said made her nervous.
"You ready, Brannock?"
"No."
"Good. Me neither."
The dining room had the same chandeliers.
The same gold-ink place cards.
But instead of one long table there were forty round ones, four hundred people in black tie, every dealer in Michigan and their wives and their bankers.
Our table was at the front, under the podium.
Pop was already there in his chair, which the club had let him bring, in a rented tux with the bow tie crooked.
My mother sat beside him in navy silk.
Then our people.
The salesman in the purple tie and his wife. Our head mechanic. The nurse with the Kia, off a night shift. The woman in the church hat, who had come because she said she'd been there for the first car and she'd be there for this.
And at the end of the table, in a red Eight Mile Motor Co. porter's polo, sat Doug Hensley.
