Chapter 15: Thursday
"Thursday is tomorrow," Jonas said.
"I know what day it is."
"Second saved message."
The flat voice gave a date.
"Received Monday, at ten fifteen p.m."
Britta again, but not soft this time.
"The gala is Thursday at seven."
"I made sure she is giving the toast for Anders."
"Six steps up to the stage, and the lights go down for the toast."
"A blind girl misses a step in the dark in front of two hundred people."
"It's a terrible accident, and the whole city cries."
"Don't be clever, and don't go near the house again."
"Do it at the gala."
The message ended with a click.
The grocery lot was very quiet.
I pressed the button once more and heard the voice say it again, and then I closed the phone with my thumb.
Six steps.
I had walked those steps three years ago, to hand a check to a children's hospital.
I remembered the rubber on the edges.
