Chapter 20: Britta's Last Move
The engine of her white car was still ticking when Jonas stopped at the curb.
I heard it through the open window, a tiny, fast metal tapping.
She was inside.
The front door of my father's house stood an inch ajar, and from the porch I smelled lavender, thick as a hand over my mouth.
Jonas took my arm.
"Stay with me."
"No," I said.
"Take the garden door."
"If she's in there, she'll use whichever way I'm not."
"I'll take the front."
"Linnea."
"You work for me."
He breathed out through his nose.
"Yes, ma'am," he said, and the gravel scraped as he went around the side of the house at a run.
I pushed the door open with the cane.
The hall was dark and cold, and nobody had turned on a light.
I knew the dark in this house better than I knew my own face.
Eleven steps to the stairs.
