Chapter 22: Walk-In

I took him upstairs by the hand and counted the stairs aloud, all nineteen.

In my bathroom I turned on the shower and let the steam fill the room.

"I want you in this shower."

"I am saying it plainly, and I am not asking twice."

"Get in."

He stood under the water in his clothes while I undid his shirt, button by button, and peeled it off his shoulders.

I washed him with my hands.

Chest, ribs, the long scar, the round one, his belly, the muscle of his thighs.

He shut his eyes.

I could feel it in how his breath changed.

"You're thirty-four," I said, "and you've been guarding other people's doors since you were twenty-six."

"Tonight nobody guards anything."

"Nobody guards you, either."

I knelt on the tile and took him in my mouth under the falling water.
