Chapter 24: Her Bodyguard
They let him go at five.
By six I was climbing the outside stairs to the carriage house over the garage, counting fourteen, with a new house key in my fist.
I had never been inside his rooms.
He opened the door before I knocked.
"You shouldn't be out here in the cold."
"Then pull me in."
He did.
The door shut behind me and my back met it, and his mouth came down on mine, hungry, shaking, nothing careful left in it.
I tore his shirt open.
Buttons skittered across the floor.
I was twenty-seven, he was thirty-four, and we had both stopped pretending.
"I thought I'd be in a cell tonight," he said against my throat.
"You thought wrong."
I got my hand between us and found him hard through his trousers, and he groaned and shoved my skirt up around my waist.
He ripped my underwear aside with one hand.
He lifted me against the door, my legs around his hips, and I heard his zipper and then the thick blunt heat of him pressing at my entrance.
