Chapter 6: The Whole Truth

"I took responsibility for it," Dane said again, "and I'd do it again."

"Mr. Fairweather," the lawyer said sharply, "you are not obliged to speak."

"He's not speaking for himself," Iris said. "I am."

She pulled out the chair across from the detective and sat down.

"You want a statement. I'll give you all of it."

The lawyer stepped forward. "Ms. Kellaway, my client's concern is that you're confused. You were sedated. Your memory..."

"My memory is the only thing in that room that wasn't drugged."

She turned to the detective.

"The text that called Dane to that room left my phone at 11:07, while Philip had it in his pocket. Dane was drugged with the same sedative as me, at a higher dose."

"And then?"

"Then he had sex with me while I couldn't move."

She said it in the same even voice.

Dane lowered his eyes to the table.

"I told him to get off," Iris went on. "He didn't. I want that on the record. He did it, and he will answer for it."

Nobody in the room spoke.

"But he did not plan it, and he is not going to sign a page that says he did. Whoever planned it is standing in your lobby with a black tie on."

The detective looked at his notepad for a long time.

Then he looked at Dane.

"Are you telling me you wrote that confession to protect someone?"

"I wrote it because it's true," Dane said. "I was on her. The rest I can't prove."

"Then we'll prove it," Iris said.

The lawyer closed his briefcase with a snap.

"This is a mistake, Ms. Kellaway. The trustee will be very disappointed."
