Chapter 9: The Million
Dane Fairweather had expected prison.
He had not expected a guest room on the third floor of Kellaway House, with fresh sheets and a window that looked out over the garden.
He stood in the middle of it with his duffel bag in his hand and did not sit down.
On the pillow lay an index card in Iris's neat, upright writing.
*One. Three feet. Two. You answer every question. Three. In public we are engaged. In private we are nothing. Four. You do not forgive yourself on my time.*
He read it twice.
The fourth rule made him laugh, once, without any humor.
He put the card in his breast pocket.
Then he sat down on the edge of the bed, because his legs had finally had enough.
He remembered the night in pieces.
There was a wall of rain on glass.
There was the heat in his own blood, and a roar in his ears, and a woman's voice saying get off.
He remembered that he had heard it.
He remembered that it had reached him from very far away, and that his hands had not obeyed him.
That was not an excuse.
He had said so in a hotel corridor, in a police station, and in a car.
He would say it to Iris every day for the rest of his life if she let him stay that long.
He had worked for Benton Kellaway for ten years and he had never once, in all that time, let anyone put a hand on his daughter.
The one person who had was him.
He was still sitting there when someone knocked.
"Mr. Fairweather." It was a woman's voice, smooth and warm. "I won't keep you."
Sylvia Codman stood in the doorway with a paper bag from a bakery in her hand.
