Chapter 7: Stay in Your Lane
I didn't say a word until we were inside my apartment with the door locked.
Rafe went to the kitchen and came back with the first aid kit from under the sink.
He had found it on the first try.
"Sit," he said.
I sat on the arm of the couch.
He knelt on one knee in front of me, opened the kit, and took my hand in both of his.
"That was my father's driver," I said.
"I saw."
"Danielle got into my father's car."
"I saw that too."
He cleaned the cut with a wipe, and it stung, and I didn't pull away.
"Did you know?" I asked.
He didn't look up.
"Tell me exactly what you mean."
"Did you know Danielle Lorring goes to the house?"
His hands stopped.
He was quiet long enough that I knew the answer was yes before he gave it.
"A woman comes on the second Sunday of every month," he said. "Blonde, about your age. Your father has the driver bring her. They eat in the small dining room, and he asks me not to be in the house."
"You never asked who she was?"
"I asked once. He said she was the daughter of an old friend."
"And you believed him."
"I'm paid not to ask questions, Cecelia. I thought it was none of my business."
"How long?"
"Five years. A little more."
I took my hand out of his.
"Five years," I said. "And you never thought to tell me. Not in the five years you were sending me texts about the garden."
"I sent you the texts because you didn't answer the ones about anything else."
That landed harder than I wanted it to.
I stood up.
"Don't," he said.
"Don't what?"
"Walk away and decide I'm on his side." He stood too. "Tell me I'm wrong, and I'll go right now. I told you in the truck. I don't work for him where you're concerned."
