Chapter 15: The Boardroom
The boardroom of Bulfinch Group sat on the fortieth floor, behind double doors of dark walnut.
I had carried coffee through them for two years.
Today I walked through them behind Hester's new lawyer.
She was a gray woman with a tablet who had never met Leopold Bulfinch and said so twice in the elevator.
Twelve chairs ringed the table.
Leopold sat at the head, under a portrait of his father.
Ten directors turned in their seats.
The twelfth chair, Lucian's, stood empty.
Security had stopped him at the lobby turnstiles an hour ago.
Three hundred staff had watched him stand there with his hands at his sides.
"This is a closed session," Leopold said without rising.
"It's a closed session of directors and holders," said the lawyer, and slid a document down the table.
"Mrs. Hester Orme signed her proxy this morning, from her bed, before two physicians and a notary."
"Miss Orme votes the Beacon Trust's thirty-four percent."
A pause rolled around the table.
"Thirty-four," said a man near the foot.
"Yes."
"We were told it was a rumor."
