Chapter 27: The Toast
Three hundred glasses went up.
Lance stood. He buttoned his jacket and smiled the smile from the gala, the one that had already won.
Liza didn't stand. She was looking at her father-in-law.
So was I.
Old Mr. Beckford set down his fork.
He didn't raise his glass.
He got to his feet slowly, one hand on the table, and the applause stopped in pieces.
"My wife has gotten ahead of me," he said. "She does that."
A few people laughed. He didn't.
"I did promise to name my successor tonight. Before I do, I'd like to read you something."
He reached inside his jacket.
Lance's mother's glass came down an inch.
He took out Liza's envelope. He'd folded it once to fit.
Lance saw it.
All the color left his face at once.
"Dad," he said. "Not here."
"Here," his father said. "You did it here. On this pier."
He unfolded the first page and held it at arm's length, because he wouldn't wear his glasses in public.
