Chapter 11: Game Seven
The first round went to seven games.
By game seven, I hadn't slept in four days, and neither had anyone else in the building.
I cooked the pregame meal at one in the afternoon, the same as every playoff day.
Chicken and rice soup with a lemon squeezed over the top, grilled bread, and a pan of my mother's mac and cheese.
Hank Doyle ate three bowls, standing at the pass.
"The soup stays," he said. "If we lose, I'll bury you with the soup."
"We're not going to lose."
"Don't say it."
"Then don't bury me."
Doran came in last, an hour before warmups, in a gray suit and a tie he'd loosened to half-mast.
He'd been back on the ice for two weeks.
His knee was braced and taped, and he played.
He took the spoon out of my hand and ate a mouthful of soup off it, in front of the entire coaching staff.
